LEXINGTON, KY. — Gatewood Galbraith, who garnered statewide fame as an outspoken, yet unsuccessful, candidate for Kentucky’s high-ranking political offices, was remembered Thursday for his tenacity in campaigns and his commitment to family and friends. More than 400 gathered at the Carnegie Center for Literacy and Learning in downtown Lexington to pay tribute to Galbraith, after the 64-year-old’s unexpected death last week due to complications from emphysema.
For three hours, friends and family celebrated his life and recalled his decades of public activism as a criminal defense attorney and political mainstay, championing reforms in state government and, most notably, calling for the legalization of marijuana.
